I had a chance to weigh my street and slick setup when changing out tires.

    Stock Evo 8 Enkeis w/ 235/45 Falkens = 48lbs
    Stock Evo 8 Enkeis w/ Motorcycle Slicks = 35lbs
    Motorcycle Slicks alone = 14lbs
    Konig Daylites (17x7) w/ MT Slick =30lbs

Cool, the seats didn't seem terribly heavy when I had them out but I didn't have a scale to weigh them to find out. But with 12 pound seats being fairly reasonable in price, it's worth looking into.

The seatbelt assembly has me quite curious though as it looked pretty beefy and I've been told it has an explosive charge in it similar to an airbag in weight.

It's pretty damn heavy. It's steel.
Hydroformed into a taper, about 2.5" in diameter on the driver's side, 1.5" diameter on the passeneger's side. I didn't measure it, just a rough estimate.

It has brackets for the steering column and dash supports. Overall, I would think 20 pounds, possibly more. Hard to say though as the wiring harness is hooked on to it in numerous places and the harness isn't all that light either. It appears to be a structural part of the car though. Making it lighter could have chassis stiffness downfalls as hydroformed steel often gives very good strength (and stiffness) to weight ratios.

If you were caging the car, I'd definitely remove it and built it into the cage, along with a light weight steering column. For a "street car" it may be hard to drop weight with this piece while retaining chassis stiffness.

Or safety. If you plan on driving on the street thats just a very bad idea. It provides about 50% of the cars front end protection in head on collisions. Mainly keeping the motor out of your lap.

I did weigh my old wheel setup.

Any basis for that claim of 50% of the protection?

I would think the double wall firewall and multiple crush zones have a signifigant impact on crash protection. By saying it was a structural component though safety was also #2 on the list. If you are caging the car though, I think you could make a dramatically lighter bar that would still offer lots of protection.

yea the car is in line for a 6 pnt cage. i wanted to get a bar and make my own light weight one. using chromoly. or just modify the stock one. i have a few idea's in my crazy head of mine. to make one and build it into the cage would be a good idea for a car getting a full blown cage. but on a street car i think id be adding more weight to make that happen.
