Default Stock EVO X losing an engine

Without searching on EVOM. And weeding through the garbage posts for a shred of info. Looking for info on the X engine losing #4 cylinder. A local guy has an all stock X. Wife drives it. 20,000 miles. One plug is missing all of the ceramic. It looks like it all just fell off. Not burned off, just broke off and dissapeared. Otherwise plug looks fine. Another plug looks like it was hit with an object or hammer. Ceramic is still there. But the electrode wouldn't have an easy time of firing. Today the dealer looked at it and said the engine is fine, just needs plugs. I cranked it over and it has no compression on two cylinders. Barely runs on 2-3 cylinders. Car was previously in for recalls some time back and on the service writep they noted engine did have abnormal sounds from it, But that a new X on the dealers lot made the same sounds.

I can't wait to see how this turns out. Hopefully the dealer will be putting a new longblock in it.

this is more common then you think. evoxforums has quite a few. Causes range from rings breaking and bouncing around in the cylinder and demolishing plugs, to valves getting bent and hammering the plug. In most cases, mitsu either rebuilt or replaced under warranty.

In my case, I was heavily modded when mine failed, so it's at Buschur getting the stage 3 treatment on the block and head.

Fuel pump relay can fail on the Evo 10's. It won't cross over to higher pump voltage @ WOT and the car will run lean at WOT. Obviously compacted with mods.

Not saying that it's an absolute that is what happend with this case, but it is possible.

    Mitsu has a revised part #: 8627A011

AMS had a good writeup on it and there is a big thread on EvoM... I think in the EvoX general section.

Ugh. I thought I was "safe" keeping the X stock. Guess I need to do some research. If it weren't for the safety difference (wife's car w/2 kids), I would regret getting the X over a used IX.

Thanks a lot Bryan. I have our EVOX here and a customers, both getting engines. Both had stock fuel pumps with 1,000 cc DW injectors and when tuned were fine. Both ended up losing a spark plug to detonation.

I'll change the fuel pump relay on both cars, thanks for the tip.

The flow rate/pattern on the injectors was also off by more than I'd like to see, as a side note.

There was another X with a catback and no tune. Maybe 4000 miles, and it was so lean it melted off two plugs. Guy put in a new set of four and it ran ok. Smoked a little..... We baselined it, I got him to put a Walbro in it. Later I tuned it. Ran fine. That was with about 6000 miles. Now I wonder if that relay was bad and still is. To me the fuel numbers in the table didn't really look right for an EVO with few mods like that after the pump was in and tuned.

C'mon man i'm sure mitsu had problems with the 4g in its early years. there will always be teething problems with any new platform, including stuff that will not show up under testing, because they cannot test for every single scenario. they'll get it sorted hopefully.

The weird thing is, the "replacement" part is actually an old part number used in other vehicles. It's not like it's a new, revised relay; it's an old relay, being used for the fuel pump.

So they introduced a "new" relay for the Evo X's fuel pump, it ended up failing, so they're reverting back to an older relay to replace it. Makes you wonder why exactly they didn't just use it to begin with.

there is nothing rong with evo x, just like every new platform/engine the car will have its problems until the engineers have completely figured every glinch so to say that 4g was sooo much better than 4b11 thats is true but to a certain extence since 4g has been around for a very looong time so by the time evo9 came around it was perfect even with a mivec in it, so as for evo x you have to give it a little time and i think the 2010 model has yet to see any problems...but i think 2010 evo x has the relay problem solved.
