Default My Buschur Long Rod 2.4L build

So this build all started off when my stock motor shit the bed while I was on the way to the track in May to see if I could hit an 11 on a slipping clutch. My previous best was 12.3 launching at only 4000rpm since the clutch liked to cook itself off a 2step launch(1.8 60ft) at 113mph (had to shift into 5th and was on 245/40-17, 24.7" tall tires, shorter than stock) with a slipping clutch plus a ton of boost leaks. That setup was BR 3.5" intercooler with pipes, BR exhaust and intake, Forge RS Bov and MBC, ARP Head studs, SMC alcohol kit with M10 nozzle, and HKS 272 cams.

I had a bunch of parts Id slowly been ordering for a minor summer project, which included a Shep built transmission, Exedy twin hd, FP Red ported/coated, GSC S2's with springs, BR 84mm intake, BR Ported/coated exhaust manifold, 1200cc PTE injectors, and a few other odds and ends. These parts never made it on my car

When the motor blew, I got right on the horn while waiting for the flatbed to come and sent an email to Nick at Buschur from my phone to ask about pricing on a 2.3L motor. He got back to me almost immediately, which I was very happy about.

We got to talking and he mentioned some custom parts they were waiting on, which were components for a high compression long rod 2.4L, but they werent sure when the parts would come in. The next day I messaged David and asked him a few questions, to which he had informed me the parts for the 2.4 just came off the truck and had arrived. I knew right then and there that was what I wanted to go with.

Then, my concern was the turbo. I figured the Red would be a fun car on a 2.4L, but I got to thinking that it just would be very unjustified to have a built motor with all that available displacement and not do an FP Black, and I felt like it would constantly bother me that I only had a Red for something like this. So I sent the FP Red back to AWD Motorsports and got it made into a Black and it was recoated. It then dawned on me that the Exedy twin is not going to be a fan of all of this torque, so I sent the twin back to Shep and exchanged that for a new revised version of the Triple SR.

My friend and I towed my Evo out to Buschur's shop in late May on zero sleep from NJ, that was interesting on the drive both ways to say the least. We left at 4am and got to BR around 1pm. If anyones ever eaten at a "Country Buffet" on no sleep, you'll know what Im talking about.

Sick car meet in PA on the way to Buschur.

The car will be run only on 93+meth, as we do not have E85 readily available here in NJ unfortunately. Theres 1 station that has it, but thats not practical at all. The meth kit is an SMC controller with an upgraded AlkyControl Shurflo pump, an M15 nozzle, all stainless steel braided hoses, and an AlkyControl meth filter. The mixture will be more meth (VP M1) than water, but I still want some water in the mixture. It will be on stock ignition, stock ecu, and stock MAF.

    The list
BR 10:1 cr Long Rod 2.4L 4G64 modified for MIVEC oil feed
FP Black ported/coated with 25psi WGA and FP Oil feed kit
BR Stage 3 MIVEC head with L19 head studs
    GSC S2 MIVEC Cams
    BR ported/coated exhaust manifold
    BR fabricated intake manifold
    BR 65mm throttle body
    BR fuel rail
    BR Double Pumper
    PTE 1200cc injectors
    Denso IKH24 spark plugs
BR 4" Race FMIC with upper and lower pipes
    BR 84mm intake pipe
MAP o2 dump housing with black ceramic coating
BR 3" catless turbo back exhaust with oil drum style Magnaflow muffler
    BR lightweight front center member
    Forge RS Bov recirculated
    Forge MBC
    JMFab catch can
    STM oil cooler kit
    STM Clutch fork stop
    AMS lower clutch line
    STM upper clutch line
Shep built transmission, Evo 9 1st, Evo 8 2-5 gears. Stock final drive and REM ISF all components.
    Exedy Triple SR (revised version)
    Bushwacker Transfer case

Im pretty sure that is everything. I got news from David today that the car should be hitting the dyno next week at some point. I have no clue as to what it will put down, nor am I really worried about numbers too much. I have a number in my head, but I wont say so as not to jinx it haha.

The only parts carried over from my previous setup are the short route intercooler pipes, the Forge RS bov and mbc, the exhaust, and thats basically it.

The Hoosier 245/45 drag radials I picked up a few weeks ago from Hoosier Tire East in CT.

The SMC Flojet vs Shurflo pump.

Not to be a dick, but please keep the meth comments to yourself. Ive heard it before, Im fully aware of the risk, I accept it. Ive done a lot of reading and research on the subject and I feel comfortable with running it. I know why my stock motor blew, it was because I was having problems with the weak/worthless Flojet pump on the SMC kit, it kept losing its prime and would not move any fluid, which started happening around March. I had the Shurflo pump from AlkyControl, but unfortunately never got around to installing. Im still a little timid about cylinder 1 after Mikes (AWD) thread on EvoM, and Id like to, possibly in the future figure out how to get cylinder 1 its own small nozzle to get some meth in there and help out a bit. Ill figure it out.

A quick video a few months back of me racing my friends Cobra with intake and exhaust. He got an Evo IX a few months ago and has since sold the Cobra. A smart fellow indeed haha.

Oh, and heres the dyno sheet I used to show people who asked how much power my car was making if they wanted to race me. It was always good for the lolz. The previous setup I was told was close to 400whp/400wtq from the previous owner, I assume it was actually around 380wtq and 380whp. I never got to get it dynoed tho to find out.

Id like to thank the guys at Buschur Racing, Shepherd Racing, and also Mike at AWDMotorsports for putting up with my questions and being so helpful!

Thanks guys. Ya know whats weird is the first person I saw do the 2.4L was my friend in his Talon with a 6262 a few months back. Then lately theyve all began popping up, its very odd haha. First it was that guy RockmanX on EvoM, then Mikey (blkcarbonevo) and those were the only 2 threads at the time doing a 2.4L/Black when I decided to pull the trigger on the 2.4L. Now theyre everywhere!

But, its definitely a great build with a lot of potential in the right parts choices. Theres a lot of streetable power to be had from this combo, and the fact that you can basically pop your hood and itll look very unassuming to someone who doesnt know what theyre looking at is even better.

And yes me too David! I think it may end up surprising both of us.

A little update...after spending way too long contemplating Ive decided to do something I never thought I would be doing and ditch the meth injection. Too much of a headache and its too risky. I was way too blinded by the fact that the methanol could be the answer to instant power without having to tool around too much with draining tanks and stuff, but it really isnt worth the headache and that feeling in the back of your head that something could go wrong.

The plan is to do one tune on 93 and one tune on E85 on the map switcher that BR sells. Im going to run 93 most of the time and get a 55 gallon drum and go fill it with E85 from a station thats not too far from me over in NY when I want to kick up the fun a bit. We are also switching out my Forge RS bov for the Tial QR. David believes that the Forge isnt holding boost. So hopefully this coming week well see some great numbers and I can finally have my car back too

Sweet build bud! That is what we are doing to my brother in law's EVO. 2.4 with a black. Should be a great car all around. Looking forward to seeing the numbers you put down.

Thank you everyone, my car is done and we do have some numbers! I will let David chime in on that part.

And Rogue I will be switching over to speed density in 2 weeks time. I'm picking it up tomorrow finally tho!

Rogue, Derek from AWD will be converting me to SD at the shootout in 2 weeks.

I picked up my car yesterday, what a blast it is. We got to Wakeman around 830am after leaving NJ at 130am, I drove 99% of the way out on 15 minutes of sleep in the car lol. When I picked it up I got t to drive it around for a bit with E85 in the tank, car pulled ridiculously hard and that was with 3 of us in the car and about 100lbs of old parts in the trunk. A 40-120 pull in 4th gear took all of 7 seconds

On the ride home, which I did the whole way back myself still running on next to no sleep, took 9 hrs cause of traffic. I emptied out the rest of the remaining E85 in wakeman and filled up on 93. I only had refill on 93 ONCE on the whole drive home, and its 470 miles from Wakeman back to home. I was doing a minimum of 75mph the whole way back (rpm's were around 3700-4000) and with all that extra weight in the car, I still managed to get 27mpg. I was very impressed and very happy and would like to thank David and Dan for building my car for me, Im very very happy with it! Cant say thank you enough times.

    Steve,

Very glad to hear you made it home and like what we built for you. The should feel fast on E85 with over 500 whp and even MORE torque! haha

The fuel mileage sounds excellent and I'm assuming the car ran well from what you are saying. As I said, I think there's some more in it and it will be interesting to see how much it picks up on the speed density.

See you in a few weeks.

David my one question is your boost controller, you said each notch is 1psi right? Im really considering keeping your boost controller on the car and just turning the boost up or down 4 notches between the 93 and E85 tune. Getting the forge on the vacuum lines is a huge pain in the ass because the nipples dont taper like your boost controller does.

My concern with boost controller originally was repeatability. I didnt want to have to worry about turning boost up or down just in case it wasnt going to be the same exact boost every time, so thats why i wanted to run two separate controllers for each map.

Also, what was the IDC on the E85 tune at 32 psi? Im curious because Im really considering stepping up the injector size to precision 1600's before the shootout from my 1200's. My guess is mid 90's.

You will need to check the boost, regardless of which boost controller you use or if you switch back and forth. I can't remember if your car has a boost gauge in it or not. If so for pump gas run about 29 peak boost, setting it in 3rd gear. On E85 run 32 psi peak, also setting it in 3rd gear. Our boost controller is 1 psi for each line on it, loosening it is less boost. Remember to take the hose off the end of the controller, turn it and then put the hose back on it.

The duty cycles hit 97% but the car is a little bit richer than it would need to be for peak power. The 1600's run like crap in a 2 liter, in your 2.4 on E85 they probably run pretty good, on pump gas it will not run well though, they low end control on them sucks.

Ok cool. Also, I havent checked yet but just curious. Where is the 2step set and wheres the rev limiter set?

Also, is it normal for some greyish fumes to be coming out of the catch can breather filter after driving around for a while? Also, is the oil filter the same as a regular 4G63 oil filter or is it specific for a 4G64?

I don't remember for sure on the two step, try it. I think it's 5500'ish. Rev limit I believe is at 8500 but I'd shift the car at about 7800 in 1-2-3.

The catch can, as I said when you were here, isn't something we use, seen before, recommend etc. The car has no PVC on it so all the pressure in the crankcase has to go somewhere, in your case to the can. Keep an eye on the can/oil level too as your can doesn't return the oil to the pan like ours does.

The filter is a Hastings, part number is on the filter so you can get more.

Ya thats what I had figured was shifting just before 8k. Ill be sure to check the level every few days just to be sure in the can.

Do you think I should get the larger injectors tho for the retune? I'm really leaning toward it. I'd hate to have the limiting factor only be the fact that the car ran out of fuel. Id kind of like to see the retune on E85 around 38psi. Obviously theres enough injector for just 93, but where were at now on E85 they seem to be getting very close to the limit. Especially since I wont be on E85 all the time, Id really like to see the car make close to 600 on your dyno on E85.

Maybe Mike can chime in with his thoughts?
